Phenomenal Science is a podcast that follows the journey of researchers and technical experts who are a part of our networks and use our expertise to conduct groundbreaking research into precision medicine.
Hosted by Phenomics Australia Communications Assistant, Ms Bridget Elliott-Rudder, the podcast explores the ways in which we support researchers to discover the genetic drivers of human disease and enable high-impact healthcare outcomes in precision medicine.
Our first episode features Dr Simon Jiang, leader of the Personalised Medicine and Autoimmunity Group at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University. He has been a long-term user of Phenomics Australia accessing our histopathology node at the University of Melbourne and the Monash Genome Modification Platform. Dr Jiang is a kidney specialist focusing on the genetic and molecular basis of autoimmunity and kidney disease to develop personalised medicines. He also leads a national personalised medicine program centred at the Canberra Hospital and ANU which treats both national and international patients.
“My inspiration to go into science and into research was my experiences with patients as a junior doctor… I realised that research would give me the opportunity to really get to the bottom of why people are unwell and make those differences.”
In this episode, we will follow Dr Jiang’s journey starting with his career in medicine as a physician to his decision to become a researcher and the immense impact of his work on our understanding of kidney disease. Through these interviews, we showcase and communicate the impact of Phenomics Australia’s support on research outcomes and celebrate our researchers.
