The opportunity

Next-generation technologies for preclinical health research – New Approach Methodologies – are being rapidly adopted by industry and regulatory agencies worldwide. The CSIRO has projected that global revenue in these technologies couldexceed $40 billion by 2040, and prioritisation in Australia could contribute more than 5000 high-tech jobs and$1.5 billion to the local economy.

The solution:

Phenomics Australia is pioneering the domestic development and adoption of these technologies - theRASTRUM 3D bioprinter is a prominent success story. Working closely with biomedical start-up InventiaLife Science, specialist technical staff at Phenomics Australia helped to develop the RASTRUM byrefining workflows, validating applications and supporting early adoption.

The impact

The RASTRUM is now operating in research labs across the world to better understand disease and predictnew life-changing therapies andwent on to win a Eureka Prize in 2021. Still headquartered in Australia, InventiaLife Science now operates in Europe and the United States, with distributors in 26 countries worldwide.

Through Phenomics Australia, NCRIS investment:

• Elevates healthcare and homegrown talent
• Safeguards domestic industry advantage
• Sets global standards for research excellence
• Enables Australia to compete on the international stage
