Supported by Phenomics Australia, the Australian Phenome Bank (APB) provides a database and cryobank of mouse sperm and embryos essential for discovering and distributing disease models in Australia. The APB maintains global research partnerships to set new standards in frozen sample security and preservation.
In partnership with the Mary Lyon Centre at the MRC Harwell Institute, APB developed advanced distribution methods and provided international training for senior technical officer Ms Nathalie Doucet in Micro-injection and Electroporation techniques, enhancing APB’s service capabilities with cutting-edge practices.

Thanks to generous Phenomics Australia and NCRIS funding, the APB installed a world-class liquid nitrogen storage system, boosting storage capacity and ergonomic design and utilising smart monitoring technology to reinforce APB’s commitment to safeguarding invaluable research materials. Coupled with a new slow-freezing cryopreservation methodology, the APB will increase embryo viability and reliability and maintain global standard excellence.
As a part of providing centralised repositories and ensuring the ongoing availability of these mouse strains, the APB has launched its new website: https://www.phenomebank.org/ . It provides features tailored to users on how best APB can support research, details about the services provided, and information on the working processes of cryopreservation, reanimation and distribution.
