In May, the Phenomics Australia Victorian Centre for Functional Genomics (VCFG) node in collaboration with Thermo Fisher, hosted a dynamic two-day workshop in Melbourne, focused on High-Content Analysis (HCA).

The event brought together leading experts and participants to delve into the latest advancements and applications of HCA technology.

Day 1: Insights and Innovations at Melbourne Connect

The first day of the workshop was held at the vibrant Melbourne Connect space, providing an ideal environment for learning and networking. Attendees were treated to insightful presentations from key experts in the field, including Phenomics Australia Scientific Director Prof. Kaylene Simpson from VCFG, Mr Mike Janes (Senior R&D Leader, Thermo Fisher, USA), and Dr Oliver Trusler (Local Field Application Scientist). These sessions covered foundational concepts of high-content analysis, the scientific principles behind high-content platforms, and the significant advantages of HCA in various applications such as 3D organoid/spheroid culture and toxicity screening.

Day 2: Hands-On Experience at the VCFG

On the second day, participants gathered at the VCFG facilities at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre for hands-on experience with high-content microscopes. The VCFG team curated a series of screen plates designed to showcase different cell culture and immunofluorescence scenarios commonly encountered during screening. These case studies provided practical examples of best practices, offering insights into sample preparation, screening techniques, and strategies to overcome common assay challenges.

Exploring Data Analytics and Machine Learning

The workshop also featured a dedicated session on data analytics, where attendees discussed various pipeline strategies and the emerging challenges posed by machine learning in high-content analysis. This discussion highlighted the importance of robust data analysis techniques in maximizing the potential of HCA technology.

Overall, the workshop was a valuable opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of high-content analysis, exchange ideas with industry leaders, and gain practical experience with cutting-edge technology.
