Phenomics Australia attended the Science Meets Parliament 2021 event, hold virtually from 2 March to 1 April, as a Science and Technology Australia (STA) member.

Science meets Parliament brings Australian scientists and technologists together for professional development, networking, and to meet with MPs and Senators. It is a highlight of the annual parliamentary calendar and has enhanced mutual understanding between Parliamentarians and scientists as well as fostering enduring partnerships and collaborations.

Dr. Louise Winteringham, member of Phenomics Australia Scientific Leadership Committee, and Head of the Translational Cancer Program at Perkins Institute met with the Hon Kevin Andrews, Member for Menzies, Victoria. They discussed the importance of research infrastructure in health discovery and translation, specifically the use of in vitro models to mimic development and disease.  Kevin was particularly interested in the production of organoids and their use in the discovery of new disease treatments.

Our Communications & Outreach Coordinator Dr. Marina Trigueros met with Ms. Kate Thwaites, Member for Jagajaga, Victoria. They discussed COVID19, research models, collaboration, STEM outreach, NCRIS Impact, biosafety, Women in STEM, Computing & Sharks, among the other delegates, as part of Science Meets Parliament 2021.
