Paper Highlight: Insights from the SLAS 2023 Special Interest Group on Phenotypic Screening.

We’re excited to share that a compelling commentary has been published as a result of a Special Interest Group session on phenotypic screening—Screen Design and Assay Technology—held at the SLAS (Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening) conference in 2023. Among the distinguished contributors, Phenomics Australia’s Scientific Director, Professor Kaylene Simpson, Head of the Victorian Centre for Functional Genomics (VCFG), participated as a panellist and co-authored this insightful mini-review.

This publication captures the collective viewpoint of the expert panel, enriched by the discussions from the 130 delegates in attendance. The commentary delves into key aspects of phenotypic screening, including:

  • Screening and Hit Validation: The importance of robust screening methodologies and the critical steps needed for hit validation.
  • Choice of Cellular Model: How the selection of the appropriate cellular model can significantly impact the outcomes of screening processes.
  • Beyond 2D Culture: Exploring the limitations of traditional 2D cultures and the advancements in 3D models that offer more physiologically relevant data.
  • Leveraging Multiparametric, Multi-Dimension Data Sets: The growing importance of utilizing complex data sets to drive more informed decision-making in screening processes.

This mini-review is a must-read for anyone new to the field or for those looking to stay updated with the latest insights from Key Opinion Leaders in phenotypic screening. Whether you’re a researcher, a lab professional, or simply interested in the advancements in screening technologies, this paper offers valuable perspectives that are both informative and thought-provoking.
