Earlier this week, it was a pleasure to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) at Parliament House, where leaders from government, research and industry came together to mark two decades of NCRIS and its impact on Australia’s research landscape.
For 20 years, NCRIS has formed the backbone of Australia’s research capability. Through nationally coordinated investment and collaboration across institutions, NCRIS has built one of the world’s most respected research infrastructure systems – delivering impact across health, agriculture, energy, defence, environmental science and advanced manufacturing.
Several messages stood out throughout the evening. Assistant Minister Julian Hill described NCRIS as “the backbone of Australia’s national research” and a critical enabler of the country’s research capability. He noted that the program’s longevity reflects its genuine value and the bipartisan support it has earned over the past two decades.
The Hon Kim Carr described NCRIS as “one of the most effective nation-building investments” and “a proven model of collaboration.” He also reminded the audience that NCRIS is an investment not only in research, but in Australia’s productivity, resilience and future prosperity.
One message resonated: world-class research doesn’t happen by chance. It relies on sustained investment in infrastructure, collaboration and the expertise of the people who make it all possible.
