We want to introduce you to Prof. Gary Hime, member of Phenomics Australia’s Scientific Director’s team and Head of the Histopathology and Digital Slide Service Unit at the University of Melbourne.
Meet Gary:
Gary Hime completed his PhD in 1993, working with Rob Saint at the University of Adelaide to analyse cell cycle mutants in Drosophila, and has continuously since used Drosophila genetics as a tool to interrogate biological questions in addition to collaborations involving mouse studies and human clinical data.
He studied reproductive biology as an NHMRC CJ Martin Fellow at Stanford University with Minx Fuller, analysing mutants that affect spermatogenesis and began studies on germline stem cell biology before returning to join David Bowtell’s lab at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute to analyse oncogene function.
He joined the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Melbourne in 1999 as a teaching and research academic. He has served as Head of Department and Deputy Head of the newly formed Department of Anatomy and Physiology, where he continues studies of stem cell dynamics, reproductive biology, epithelial formation and using Drosophila to analyse human genomic variants.

Phenomics Australia Histopathology and Slide Scanning Service helps researchers across Australia in analysing histology images and data on genetically modified or treated experimental animals. This service offers the latest in high-quality capabilities, including: Quality-controlled mouse necropsies and tissue preparation, pathological analysis and scoring of tissues, digital slide scanner capable of producing high-quality images, high-resolution light microscopy with electronic image capture, and specialised staining.
Staff providing this service have extensive histology, diagnostic and electronic imaging experience. Consultant Medical and Veterinary Pathologists are available to provide expert advice.
The Histopathology and Slide Scanning Service is based at the Department of Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Melbourne.
