On November 26, 2024, Phenomics Australia’s CEO, Professor Michael Dobbie, joined a panel discussion and Q&A session organised by the Victorian Cancer Biobank to explore the development of a fit-for-purpose national biobanking strategy for Australia.
In Australia, we have a high-quality, active biobanking community that supports a wide range of research. The 2021 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap acknowledged the strength of the Australian biobanking ecosystem but highlighted the need for enhanced coordination to maximise the impact of our biobanks.
The session featured a keynote presentation by Professor Jens Habermann, Director-General of BBMRI-ERIC, who shared valuable insights into BBMRI-ERIC’s structure and its contributions to biobanking initiatives globally. Attendees also received an overview of the current Australian biobanking landscape, including national research infrastructure and the role of the Australasian Biospecimen Network Association (ABNA).
The event culminated in a thought-provoking panel discussion and interactive Q&A session, where participants examined what a fit-for-purpose national biobanking strategy might entail for Australia.
