Last week, Phenomics Australia hosted Dr Louise Ludlow and Dr Beth Caruana, President and Vice President of the Australasian Biospecimen Network Association (ABNA) at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, at The Australian National University.
Nathalie Doucet, Manager of the Phenomics Australia node the Australian Phenome Bank, (APB), showcased the capabilities of the APB and the Australian Phenomics Facility.
A/Prof. Amee George, Phenomics Australia Scientific Director and Lead of the Phenomics Australia Functional Genomics node, the ANU Centre for Therapeutic Discovery (ACTD) showcased the node’s 3D bioprinting and automation and liquid handling capabilities.

Supported by Phenomics Australia, the Australian Phenome Bank (APB) is both a physical repository and a database of genetically modified mouse strains used in medical research in Australia. The APB operates as a national infrastructure partnership between The Australian National University (ANU) and Monash University (Monash) and provides essential banking and distribution of mouse strains in Australia and worldwide. The services of cryopreservation, storage, reanimation, distribution and importation are streamlined into packages to lower costs and protect research.
The Australian Phenomics Facility specialises in the development, characterising and archiving of mouse models of human disease. They have an experienced genomics and bioinformatics capability focussed on the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms and the phenotyping capability to make the biological associations with probable human disease traits. Their goals are to first derive the underlying genetic mechanisms and then look to extend this across the population and better understand cohort differences and responses.
The facility was established in 2005 and receives funding from the Australian Government’s NCRIS, Super Science and CRIS programmes through the Phenomics Australia and contributions from the Australian National University.
They have an open access policy and support academic and corporate research programmes in Australia and internationally.
Through the Victorian Centre for Functional Genomics (VCFG) at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (Perkins), the ANU Centre for Therapeutic Discovery (ACTD, The John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU) the Monash Functional Genomics Platform (MFGP) at Monash University, and the Functional Genomics South Australia (FGSA) at the University of Adelaide (in partnership with SAHMRI), Phenomics Australia Functional Genomics and High-throughput screening services enable biomedical researchers Australia-wide with the ability to perform novel discovery-based screens using multiple platforms.
